Cervical CANCER
Cervical cancer is a cancer in the cervix, the opening of the womb from the vagina. There are about 3200 new cases diagnosed each year. 900 of these women will die from the disease. This cancer is the most common cancer in women under the age of 35. Fortunately, it is being detected earlier thanks to the success of the UK screening (smear test) and the HPV vaccination.
Cervical Cancer is a preventable disease. If we can detect precancerous cells early, we can prevent 75% of the cancer from developing.
Why Is The Smear Test So Important?
Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV, a very common and usually harmless virus that can sometimes cause cervical cancer.
The Smear Test tests for HPV and it is estimated that screening saves around 5,000 lives per year. The Smear Test is not a test for cancer, it’s a test to prevent cancer.
The HPV vaccination programme has significantly decreased the rate of cervical cancer but it is still important to get your smear test even if you have been vaccinated.
